SHEFFIELD

Sheffield and steel, The Industrial North and the archetypical philanthropy associated with the wealth of 19th Century business magnates all come together on this trip to Sheffield. This will be a gently paced day, more meandering than flying around!

  • First stop the Millennium Gallery which opened in 2001.  After  a cup of tea or coffee and some pastries in the pleasant Ambulo Café we enjoy a short talk from the Curator of Metalwork at the  Gallery. An obvious focus for the Metallic City, from steel mills to silversmiths.
  • Then time for a wander around Gallery rooms, including Metals and a room holding the donations of works from Ruskin himself. Another room hosts a temporary exhibition ‘Ways of Water’. A nice shop also!
  • A short walk through the innovative Winter Garden- one the largest temperate glasshouses in Europe, opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 2003 and providing a gentle oasis in the city centre- to our Mediterranean two course lunch at Ego.
  • Right next door is the Graves Gallery, named after its founder and benefactor John  George Graves (1866-1945). Graves was a watch maker turned Mail Order innovator. Another benefactor was John Newton Mappin (as in Mappin and Webb). A fine municipal collection. We shall be given a private “highlights” tour and then time to absorb it all at leisure.
  • Close by is newly unveiled Covid Memorial, designed to acclaim by George King. It is made, of course, of Sheffield Steel and was fabricated at Steel Line Limited.
  • Back to the coach and a pre-rush-hour return to Harrogate with the (now) customary ‘refreshments’

Numbers are limited to 30.  Early booking is advised. BOOKINGS CLOSE 8th March
