Today we head to Hull to visit the art collection of the University of Hull. Tucked away in the Brynmor Jones library, this collection of “breathtaking quality” of over 400 works of art started from scratch in the 1960’s on a modest annual endowment of £300 from Thomas
Robinson Ferens. Focusing on – at the time – less popular British art from 1890-1940, the collection
boasts an impressive array of works by, amongst others, the Camden Town and Bloomsbury Groups and now enjoys both a national and international reputation. The collection also displays an exceptional
representation of sculpture. We start our visit to the gallery with a talk from Dr John Bernasconi, Director of the Art Collection before exploring the permanent collection and the temporary
exhibition at leisure.
Heading north, we stop off for a buffet lunch before arriving in the afternoon at Burton Agnes Hall, home to the Cunliffe-Listers for over 900 years. The Hall is a beautiful late Elizabethan manor. It is a house of “immense charm and character” and was described by Mark Girouard as “a splendid and glittering
composition”. On the top floor in the Long Gallery, we find an unexpected collection of world class art from the golden age of Dutch art through to the Impressionists, Fauves and beyond. There is also a collection of contemporary furniture by the renowned maker John Makepeace. The head guide will give us a talk on the collection and then we shall be at leisure to enjoy the Hall itself and the magnificent gardens, just prior to their annual National Garden scheme opening.
