Curator Sam Cornish on John Hoyland
John Hoyland (1934–2011) was one of Britain’s most significant abstract artists of the postwar era. Known for his bold use of colour, dynamic compositions, and emotional intensity, Hoyland came to prominence in the 1960s as part of a new wave of British artists exploring non-figurative art. Influenced by American Abstract Expressionists, he developed a distinctive style that balanced formal structure with expressive gesture.
Sam Cornish is a writer and curator. Recent projects include Unreal City: Abstract Painting in London, Saatchi Gallery, 2024, These Mad Hybrids: John Hoyland and Contemporary Sculpture, Bristol and Sheffield, 2024-45, Garth Evans; A Place in the World, Irapuato, Mexico, 2024, Mali Morris: Returning, Newcastle, 2024. He is curator at the John Hoyland Estate.
